The Orangevale Woman’s Club Loyal to Local is pleased to spotlight the Dairy Queen Grill and Chill, a long time Orangevale establishment.  In June of this year owners Joe and Cynthia are celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the Dairy Queen in Orangevale.  Joe began his restaurant career while a senior in high school with Foster’s Freeze and went on to become a manager after graduation.

In 1982 he purchased the Orangevale business which became a Dairy Queen in the late 1980s. While their sales were down during the pandemic, they benefited from their association with third party delivery. Joe and Cynthia love Orangevale and are generous supporters of the community. At the recent Best of Orangevale awards banquet they were named “Best Community Sponsor“ and “Best Fast Food”.

The Dairy Queen Grill and Chill is located at 9265 Greenback Lane. Their business hours are Sunday-Thursday 10:30-10:30, Friday and Saturday 10:30-11:00. Ashley's Country Cafe

Jun Ventura 2.HEIC

Orangevale Woman’s Club Loyal 2 Local program is currently highlighting another great Orangevale business, Ashley’s Country Café, located at 9411 Madison Ave, Orangevale, CA. The new owner, Juan Ventura is locally raised, and loves our Orangevale Community It is hard to believe that this 21 year old young man could step up to the challenge of buying and running a successful restaurant, but that is just what Juan did. Starting as a dishwasher, at the age of 17, he worked alongside his dad, who has been Ashley’s head chef for many years; working his way up the ladder, while dreaming of one day owning a place like this. When the opportunity came up this past March of 2021, he jumped at the chance to follow that dream, knowing that our country was still in the throes of the Covid pandemic. Loving and working in the Orangevale area, Juan felt that he could develop the support of this tight knit community to grow his business. Juan’s dad is the head chef, as he had many years working under the original Ashley’s owner. All of Juan’s employees, including the cooks, sous-chefs, waiters, bussers and hosts have a team spirit of working hard together to making the diner’s experience special.

After graduation, Juan is continuing his college education in Business Management and Computer Sciences, and Marketing. It is Juan’s hope to create a solid breakfast and lunch café for the entire community to enjoy regularly. With chef dad doing the cooking, mom waiting tables, helping with day to day activities, and Juan’s younger brother hosting on weekends, when not in school, it is Juan’s hope is to make this a full family enterprise at some point. He is only waiting for his young sister to come of age in order to work with the family in a year or two.

Ashley’s Country Café offers the full slate of breakfast foods, including pancakes, meats, waffles, and my  favorite egg specialty, eggs benedict. Luncheon meals include a variety of burgers, sandwiches, soups, chili and so much more. Ashley’s is open for takeout or dine in, seven days a week from 6:00 am – 2:00 pm. If you haven’t regularly been to Ashley’s Country Café, you are missing great food at a fair price with courteous and quick service by happy waiters. Mention you saw this article, and Juan will honor an Ashley’s Special, running through December 31st 2021 of Buy 2 meals & two drinks, get one meal ½ off.

Dezy’s Beef, Bread & Beer. Dezy is a native of Iran where he was a member of the national Jiu-Jitsu
team which allowed him to immigrate to the US under an extraordinary ability visa. Within 2 months of arriving, he joined the army and in 5 months he proudly became a US citizen. He retired from the
Department of Defense and decided to follow his dream of opening a business in the food industry. He remembered the delicious Sangak bread he enjoyed as a child and decided to share it with us. He
purchased a special oven for baking the bread, one of only 20 in the entire US and the only one in
northern California.

Dezy loves the Orangevale community, the friendly people and feels very welcome here. His previous business Dezy's Market closed due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Ducky's
Donut Shack

IMG_20211012_084336901.jpg

Orangevale Woman’s Club’s new Loyal 2 Local just interviewed Phillip of Ducky’s Donut Shack at 9372 Madison Ave #9, Orangevale. In 1989, Phillip opened his first donut shop in Southern California called Spudnuts.

Ducky’s not only serves donuts but coffee, specialty coffee, muffins, and breakfast croissants. Phillip and his wife Kay, work hand in hand to make sure that Orangevale can enjoy freshly baked donuts, daily! Phillip arrives to work at 1:00am to start making donuts for the day. Kay runs the rest of the shop by making sure that every customer leaves a happy customer. Just by walking in the front door, you can tell that Kay and Phillip work very hard to make everyone feel excited to start their day with a delicious breakfast treat.

During the COVID closures, they maintained a positive outlook to get through the slower times of business. Phillips’s mother taught him that to live a rich life you must find happiness in what you do and spend quality time with your family. Keeping a positive mindset has truly helped him and his wife run a successful business during challenging times. Weekends are very busy for Ducky’s but, they’ve seen a slow down on weekdays during the pandemic. Thanks to the support of the Orangevale community, their business has held strong.

Pop by the shop next time you’re out and about! They are running a special until November 30, 2021, get 15% off your order of 2 dozen donuts or more. Ducky’s Donut Shack also offers 20% off your order of 5 dozen donuts or more for all schools and churches year-round. Everyone loves someone who brings donuts to work! Hours of operation are Tuesday to Sunday from 5:30AM to 2:00PM. If you’d like to place a special order for parties or birthdays, call (916) 294-7574. La Placita Mexican Restaurant

9272 Greenback Ln

(916) 988-2940

image.png

This month for Loyal to Local sponsored by the Orangevale Women’s Club interviewed Carlos, the owner of La Placita Mexican Restaurant at 9272 Greenback Lane.

In 1988, Carlos’s parents decided to open a Mexican restaurant in Orangevale. They chose Orangevale as they were familiar with the area since they lived near and went to Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks. They named it La Placita meaning “The Little Plaza” or The Spot.

His father was a building contractor who quickly learned how to run the back of the restaurant. Carlos’s mother was a waitress and already had some experience running the front area of the restaurant. Carlos and his sister helped run the business which made it a true family affair.

In 2007, Carlos took over running the business when his parents retired. He is grateful for our community which helped make it the success it is. In return, La Placita supports our community in many ways, such as handing out free dinner coupons to recent BV and Casa graduates.

When Covid hit, Carlos stayed positive even though it was quite a challenge. He had to learn to run his business strictly on a 100% “Take Out” basis. During the first three months, his revenue actually increased. He had to add 3 telephone lines and incorporate 2 different ways to order online to accommodate all the orders.

Since indoor dining has returned, he has now doubled his staff and hired 6 new employees. Now he is serving 70% dine in and 30% take out. His most popular meal is the “Patrick Burrito” named after a friend of his fathers. It is made with strips of Carne Asada steak, with sautéed tomato, bell pepper, onion and cheese, the plate also comes with rice, beans.  Great food and  great atmosphere! Contact Carlos and La Placita at 916-988-2940 or check out their menu at www.laplacitaov.com

Tonno's Sports Bar and Grill

9267 Greenback Ln

Tonno 7.jpg

The Orangevale Woman’s Club has found another gem in the neighborhood for our “Loyal 2 Local” promotion - Tonno’s Sports Bar and Grill at 9267 Greenback Lane.

Andy Tonnorelli and his dad, Steve, used to have an upscale appliance business but decided they were tired of moving refrigerators and wanted a fun retirement plan.  So, they pooled their money and opened up Tonno’s 9 years ago in 2012. The name of the establishment comes from a nickname:  Tonno’s is short for Tonnorelli.  Andy says the benefits of opening their business in Orangevale is the support from the community.  He noted that people love to support local and he is very grateful for that.

Although Covid definitely took a hit to their business financially, Andy used this time to do a face lift on their property and spent quality time with his wife and 2 daughters.  Now that life is beginning to get back to normal, Tonno’s is incorporating Taco Tuesdays, Wing Wednesdays, and live bands.  Now let’s talk about their food.  They have a great variety of craft bar foods that are amazing.  Everything from burgers (check out the Monstrosity Burger if you dare), a variety of tacos, chili’s, salads and tater tots with toppings.  There is also something I had never heard of: Peanut Butter Fries (I hear they are wonderful).  There is something for everyone.  Tonno’s is fortunate to have an outdoor patio that accommodates large groups of people as well.  Tonno’s will be offering 15% off of your tab as long as you let them know where you saw this article. Check out their website at www.tonnosbg.com or give them a call at (916) 989-8666.

The Orangevale Woman’s Club’s #Loyal2Local campaign has done it again.  We are proud to highlight  BADFISH COFFEE & TEA located at 9346 Greenback Lane, Suite 3 in Orangevale. It is borne of a love for the community and specialty coffee, combining hometown feel with high quality ingredients. They serve Chocolate Fish Coffee exclusively which has won several national awards for its consistent roasting quality! “It is a coffee that needs nothing, you can tell the difference.”  Badfish opened in June 2018. Pearl and Mark, the owners, had 8-9 years experience working for others when they finally realized they wanted to open their own café. Pearl and Mark both grew up in Orangevale and love the community so it only made sense to open Badfish Coffee &Tea here. As always, Pearl found the community extremely supportive as she and Mark worked 90 hours a week. The café has turned into a welcoming spot where people love to gather inside or outside and talk about their day.

Badfish has survived the Covid drama by online orders which customers love, having terrific customer service, and having an immaculately clean cafe. Although they  had to sell their home to keep the café going, Mark and Pearl say it has been worth it.

Along with their fabulous coffees, teas and smoothies they also offer great breakfast items like avocado toast, peanut butter toast with bananas, and delicious breakfast sandwiches.

BADFISH is offering a 25% percent off of a Spring Drink Special until June 18th. The Paisley Cafe

9372 Madison Ave

(916) 790-8815

paisley pic 1.jpg

Loyal 2 Local sponsored by Orangevale Woman’s Club of Orangevale was delighted to interview Chef Ozzie who owns The Paisley Cafe at 9372 Madison Ave Suite 1, Orangevale. She chose Orangevale because she lives here and loves the town and the people. Chef Ozzie has eight children, and each of them have worked in the restaurant business in various roles. She also has two very spoiled dogs. To keep her afloat, she has been providing meals to seniors. At the peak she was providing 650 meals a week but is now providing approximately 250 per week

She was raised by her grandmother in England, who was also a chef. As a little girl, she spent hours in the kitchen with her Nana, learning how to prep, cook and bake. As an adult, Ozzie worked in the food industry, and later, learned to fine tune her skills by attending and earning a degree in the Culinary Arts Program at American River College, in Sacramento.

The idea of The Paisley Café had been in the works for years, and we are so excited that it finally became a reality in November 2017. Unfortunately, due to COVID her business has dropped by 70%. Her meals are always made from scratch using locally grown and seasonal ingredients whenever possible. She uses real butter and makes her own sausage. Everything is bigger and better.  Some of her customers favorites are her Boy and Girl large and delicious cinnamon rolls, the epic Widow Maker burger, corn beef hash, avocado toast and biscuits and gravy and of course her specialty omelets.

She is currently open FRIDAY, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY from 8am – 2pm. She is only serving breakfast right now but lunch should be resuming soon. She is running a special on the Widow Maker Burger of 20% off through Sunday May 9th. You must say where you saw the special. She offers outside dining and will hopefully begin indoor dining in May.  Online ordering at www.the-paisley-cafe.com and provides local delivery within a 5-mile radius. Call today and order at 916-790-8815.

L&M

Liquor and Deli

8836 Greenback Ln

L%26M%20Family%204_edited.jpg

The owners, Dad (Lupe) and Mom (Mary) Maldonado just celebrated 60 years of marriage. Their 3 children and numerous grandchildren continue to work in the store and have for years. Granddaughter Mariah says “Grandpa is like the Godfather. He works hard all day from 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and teaches us great work ethics.” Daughter Lisa works a few days a week and her husband works security for L&M at night and even Lupe’s brother Jesse, worked alongside him for years.

Lupe originally worked at Capri Market for 20 years before moving to Carmichael to open up Madison Liquor for 4 years.  Because they live in Orangevale, it seemed reasonable to have their business back in Orangevale and opened up L&M Liquor and Deli in October of 1986. They recently won the Best of Orangevale for the 5th consecutive year in a row for Best Convenient Market. They are so humbled by that and want to thank everyone who voted for them. If that’s not enough, Lupe has been president of the local Lions Club and supports many kids’ sports programs.

L&M is known for their delicious Tri Tip sandwiches on Saturday’s from 10am until they run out, usually about 2pm. They have been serving it for 11 years going through approximately 32 Tri Tips every Saturday.  Their son Derek, shares the barbeque with dad. The Hot Pastrami Sandwich is also very popular.  They are running a special Monday thru Friday until April 23, 2021, one FREE 2oz. Deep River CHIPS with each sandwich purchased. (Hot dogs excluded).   Eat in or take home. Hours of operation for the deli are 10am to 4pm. Come in today and meet the Maldonado family. You won’t be disappointed.

Palm Tree

Brewing Company

6124 Hazel Ave

(916) 294-7340

palm tree photo 2.jpg

Wow! Did the Orangevale Loyal 2 Local find another cool place to visit. If you have not tried Palm Tree Brewery at 6124 Hazel Ave. in Orangevale, you are really missing something. What a fun place to hang out with your friends with ample outside seating. If the name sounds familiar its because Palm Tree Brewery was located next to Adalberto’s on Greenback from 2018. Derek, the owner, was successful at that location but found that after a few years he needed something bigger. He closed the one location and opened the new location at 6124 Hazel in February 2020, right before Covid set in. He classifies his brewery as a Beer bar/Pregame diner.

Derek is from Hawaii. So why did he choose Orangevale to start his business? He chose Orangevale because of its community atmosphere and the comradery of other fellow business owners. He states “without the community out pouring, he would never have opened up”.  Derek believes in paying it forward. As long as he has lived in Orangevale, he has served as a director at the Chamber of Commerce and has worked at the Orangevale Fair Oaks Food Bank in his off hours. He has even purchased a new home in Orangevale. He is planning a Bingo night down the road with half the proceeds to go to the Food Bank. Derek is a very energetic and ambitious individual with lots of ideas in the future to make a big success of the Palm Tree Brewery, from enlarging the outside eating area to eventually having music.

His menu is full of yummy comfort food. He currently has many different types of hotdogs, sausage and bratwurst, 3 types of tamales: chicken, beef and chili cheese with green sauce, cheese and pepperoni pizza and the most popular food on the menu -nacho’s with jalapenos and chili with cheese and Frito’s. He serves “Good clean straight forward beer, ale and lagers”. His special recipe cans of Queen and King IPA beer can be found in the Grocery Outlet in both Roseville and Orangevale, Scotty’s Hideaway, and Tonno’s Sports Bar and Grill. He hopes to have the beer in 50 different stores. In fact, look for it in the local Raley’s and Bel Air by early summer this year. Watch for the Poncho Villa food truck on some Wednesdays and Thursdays. On Thursday, March 18, look for Cousin’s Main Lobster food truck.

Derek is offering a special of one Cheese Pizza with any beer of your choice for only $10. It is good from Friday, March 12th to Saturday, March 27th. Be sure to say where you saw the special!  The hours are Monday – Thursday noon to 10:00pm, Friday and Saturday; noon to 11:00pm and Sunday noon to 9:00pm.  The Palm Tree Brewery is making good craft beer you can try over and over again!

O'Connor's

Wood Fire Grill & Bar

9267 Greenback Lane

(916) 988 -0112

Steve at OConnors.jpg

Steve, at O’Connor’s Wood Fire Grill and Bar has been at 9267 Greenback Lane, in Orangevale for 15 years.  Steve had been in the catering business for years when an opportunity arose to move his catering business to Orangevale. There he could have a full-service lunch and dinner at a family run restaurant.  In 2015, they shut down the restaurant for 6 weeks to refurbish the inside and add a brand-new bar.  Steve likes the smaller feel in Orangevale and enjoys seeing the same familiar faces.

O’Connor’s is planning on enlarging the outside patio and adding a new cover and sides to help with lessening the noise.  O’Connor’s plan for the expanded area is due to be finished sometime in April.  They also plan to add live music on the weekends.  O’Connor’s still has the authentic Santa Maria-style barbeque dishes that you have come to love from their family restaurant, but now they also offer wood-fire pizzas, pasta dishes, such as Pesto Penne, Shrimp Scampi Linguini and Cajun Chicken Penne, gourmet burgers and a broad range of appetizers and salads.  Customers have been raving about O’Connor’s signature ribs and sauces for years!  Come and experience the food and fun for yourself.  Steve has asked all of Orangevale to remember that O’Connor’s was originally known for its catering.  Steve noted that with their business has suffered and wanted to remind everyone that if you need catering, please remember O’Connor’s.  O’Connor’s is currently offering 10% off any catering order for 30 or more people

O’Connor’s is also offering another special for outside and to-go orders: $10 OFF Your Bill When You Order Two Dinner Entrees if you say where you saw this ad.  Hours are Monday-Saturday, 11:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m., Sunday 11:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.             (916) 988-0112 or www.woodpit.com

Clay Oven

8807 Greenback Lane

(916) 989-1482

We had great time interviewing the owner Mavi. When entering the restaurant, you are greeted with the delicious aroma of fresh herbs and spices that whet your appetite for the exciting meals to come.

Mavi opened Clay Oven in January 2020 and as you know had to close down 3 months later. He is now open for Take Out service from 11am to 9pm 7 days a week. The pandemic has definitely caused him some difficulties but he remains very positive. He was forced to lay off workers, work longer hours, and figure out how much food to buy weekly with only take-out orders being served. Mavi says, “The people in Orangevale have been wonderful to us. We really appreciate it.” Some of his favorite meals people ask for are “Butter Chicken, Lamb, Chicken Curry and the Samosa appetizers.” Mavi opened another restaurant called the Indian Palace in 2017 located at 8865 Folsom Blvd. in Sacramento. Obviously, he is a hard worker and takes pride in his restaurants.

Clay Oven Indian Cuisine is a traditional Indian restaurant in Orangevale that serves authentic Indian cuisine. Lupita's

9353 Greenback Lane

(916) 988-0888

  • Facebook

We spoke with Lupita, the owner. She has been at the current location since 1996, 25 years!  She originally wanted to be a singer but with 8 kids, that wasn’t going to pay the bills, and cooking is what she loves to do.  Lupita started cooking in the Eastern and Arcade area before moving to her present location on Greenback.  Everything at Lupita’s is homemade, the way her mother and grandmother did and which is why it is so good.  When asked what her restaurant is known for, she talked about how people say they ate somewhere else and it wasn’t as good as hers and she asks “why would you eat there when you can eat here?”

When asked about how business has been throughout the pandemic, she replied that she is down about 95% but is keeping a very positive outlook.  Lupita’s closed down for the first 3 months of the pandemic and then reopened for a week. She ended up having a gas leak that again closed her down for the next 4-5 months. Lupita’s is back open and the kitchen back together.  The restaurant right now is open for takeout only, Tuesday thru Sunday 4:00-9:00 p.m., closed Mondays.  But beginning January 29th, she will be open for lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.  Lupita wants to thank the Orangevale Community for all the support and love that she has experienced from our Community.  Please give her a call, (916) 988-0888, and order some fabulous Mexican food and support one of our longtime businesses.  I highly recommend the Chili Rellenos!  Lupita’s will be offering an amazing Welcome Back Special Combo Lunch which will include your choice of 2 tacos or 2 enchiladas with rice and beans. The regular cost is $10.95 but the special is only for $5.00.  The special is available until February 28th.  Also, when you go visit Lupita’s, be sure and notice the beautiful plant on her counter, it was a grand opening gift 25 years ago!
